William Hill Family

The William Hill Family Genealogical Database

This is the story of mostly ordinary people: farmers, teachers, lawyers, doctors who loved their families and their country. "William Hill from Exeter, England was one of the first Hill’s to immigrate to New England in the ship "William and Francis" which arrived in the new world on June 5, 1632. He settled first in Dorchester, Massachusetts where he became a man of much prominence. On November 2, 1635 he was admitted a freeman, and on November 12, 1635 he received a grant of land. Soon afterward he removed to Windsor, Connecticut where he was granted a home lot and set out an orchard. In 1639 he was appointed by the General Court to examine the arms and munitions of the towns in the colony, and was also auditor of public accounts from 1639 to 1641 and in 1644 he was deputy of the General Court. Later he removed to Fairfield, Connecticut where he finally settled and was deputy to the General Court and collector of Customs. He and his son, William were granted by the Town, home lots between Paul’s Neck and Robert Tourney’s lot on the Northeast side of Dorchester Street and Newton Square. He died about 1649 and his will dated September 9, 1649 and proved May 15, 1650, his wife Sarah and children: Sarah, married September 17, 1646 to Joseph Loomis, William II, Joseph, Ingnatius, James and Elizabeth."

The descendants of this family steadily moved westward before settling in Orleans County in Western New York state in the early 1800’s. Many of the surnames and their families listed on this site have all been connected either directly or by marriage.

Much of the information comes from the New York census, cemetery records, marriage data, family bibles and the extensive work of Howard J. Hill who had his work microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah August31, 1984. Also, a big thank you to Freeman Crosby who helped me make this information available to you......
